Culture Spotlight Featuring Stephanie Soto

Born and raised in New Jersey, family roots from Brooklyn, NY, moved to the new south Charlotte, NC. Studied at the Lee Strasberg School of Acting, NY and decided behind the camera was more intriguing. G-Ma Productions llc is the production company.Gaming and Life, my first Short Film loosely based on a true story. The Executive Team Consists of 3 Black Females and 1 Puerto Rican Male all Family.

Tell us about your experience at the Hip Hop Film Festival? We had a great experience at the 2022 Hip Hop Film Festival from the hospitality to the showcases of great content by talented filmmakers local and afar. As female filmmakers our road is a little tougher, especially being a minority. We appreciate that this festival has a Female creator who showcases all films about the culture. The team was very informative about all aspects of the process from start to finish and we can't wait to submit again.

Why are stories from the culture important? If we don’t tell our stories then who will? It’s frustrating seeing our narratives written, directed and produced by people who are not part of our culture. People of color need to be seen and represented in stories outside of being criminals, slaves and well simply put… broke.

What projects are you working on now?Currently I am in pre-production of a comedy. Filming a Short film about Dementia. Treatment on a Film about mental health in communities of Color. Looking for financing to create the latter project its detailed and has a lot of moving parts

Why do you think the Harlem Film House and Hip Hop Film Festival are important? The Harlem Film House and Hip Hop Film Festival are important to the community and others outside the community to learn about Our Culture from Us. There are so many topics to showcase from no financial equity, to unfair mortgage practices within the culture to mental health that gets dismissed because they (whoever they are) think we are a strong Community. And, we are but the resources should be available for "us" too! You provide a safe platform to display the good, bad and indifferent in the culture and Its a GREAT THING! We can't wait to submit more and possibly see if you can gather financial resources to help produce upcoming content retaliating to the Culture.
